I know everyone and their mothers has an opinion on who should be in the 2023 College Football Playoffs and I know that’s exactly what the NCAA wants but it’s still so weird to me that we aren’t all in agreement about Florida State deserving an opportunity to win the National Championship.
I’m sure if you pay attention to college football, you’ve heard all the arguments already but let’s quickly run through some of the obvious reasons why FSU should be in the Final Four.
Why Florida State should be in the College Football Playoffs?
Michigan won all of their games and they are in the CFP.
Washington won all of their games and they are in the CFP.
Florida State won all of their games yet they are not in the CFP.
Texas and Alabama lost games but they’re in the CFP and Florida State isn’t.
Alabama’s loss was TO TEXAS.
But Alabama is in the College Football Playoffs and FSU is not.
Ok.
If you win every single game, you should be able to keep winning games until there are no more games and someone hands you a trophy.
I don’t understand why that’s even up for discussion.
So why isn’t Florida State in the CFP?
Apparently, Florida State didn’t play a strong enough schedule.
FSU is ranked 55th in strength of schedule while Alabama was ranked 5th.
Sure, the ACC has worse teams than the SEC but no one seemed to give a shit when Clemson was sleepwalking through undefeated seasons year after year
I never understood punishing teams for their opponent’s inability to recruit better players.
It’s not Florida State’s responsibility to make sure Syracuse and Duke have talented football teams.
It’s their job to win football games and they did. Like, every fucking game.
There’s also a belief that Florida State would get their door blown off by Texas or Bama because their star QB1, Jordan Travis, broke his leg and FSU is going out there with a third-stringer.
Not being eligible to win a National Championship despite winning every single game because a player is injured doesn’t sound stupid to you guys?
Imagine the Patriots being disqualified from winning the Super Bowl because Drew Bledsoe got hurt. Nick Foles doesn’t get to go on that historic playoff run because Carson Wentz’s kneecap is on his thigh.
What is the point of the College Football Playoffs?
We have to figure out why the College Football Playoffs even exist in the first place.
The previous BCS system frequently left undefeated teams out of the Finals because of their schedule or some arbitrary nonsense.
It was unfair for these kids to put in the work to win every single game 1and not be considered potential National Champions thanks to bullshit outside of their control.
If the goal is to put together the four best schools to determine the truly best team of the year then a team that won all of their games, especially in a Power 5 conference, should easily walk into the playoffs.
But obviously, the goal is to manufacture the most competitive and captivating football games which has nothing to do with who a champion is.
The committee wants to create the most entertaining product which is exactly why FSU needs to be there.
What’s the real reason why Florida State should be in the CFP?
Some people think the best games are those close, competitive shootouts where teams trade touchdowns until the final buzzer but those games happen like, once every 7 weeks or so.
What’s more likely are boring ass, low-scoring games where these 4 teams just call HB Dives all day long until you wake up from your nap with Scott Van Pelt on Sportscenter highlighting a 3-0 Michigan victory.
A guy like me prefers an embarrassing, one-sided blowout over a sleepy defensive struggle.
Let Florida State go out there without their best player against a far superior team full of grown-ass men and let’s see if there’s a secret NCAA mercy rule they can enact to save the local ICU from using up all of their remaining beds on FSU sophomores.
We have been robbed of a hilarious gang jump-in and I will never forgive the NCAA for what they took from us.
There is blood on their hands for not letting Florida State go out there and end up with blood all over their hands.
So who wins the 2023 National Championship?
Who even cares anymore, man? I don’t know, Texas? Shrug.
