Does Luke Voit Still Have a Place on the Yankees?

The New York Yankees needed to make a big splash at the trade deadline after running on autopilot and being generally comatose for the majority of the 2021 season.

They acquired two lefty sluggers, Joey Gallo and Anthony Rizzo.

Problem is—Luke Voit is injured and his position has now been filled.

Rizzo had a phenomenal first weekend in pinstripes going 5-for-9 with 3 walks, 2 homers, 3 RBIs and 5 runs as the Yankees swept the Miami Marlins. The team seemed energized by the new additions to the team.

Anthony Rizzo is clearly the daily first baseman for the Yankees.

So where does Luke Voit fit on the Yankees?

Since debuting for the Yankees in July 2018, Voit has hit .274 with an .888 OPS and 60 bombs.

Last season, Voit led the league in homers. Sure, it was a shortened season, ya know, because the air was poison. But he still led the league in homers nonetheless.

He’s good at baseball. If anything, his flaw is his inability to remain on the field due to various injuries to every single part of his body.

Here’s what Aaron Boone said about Voit’s future with the team:

We’ll see,” Boone said Friday. “I mean, so many things can happen, obviously.”

Yike. You probably want your head coach to uh, want you on the team and not treat you like you’re you could be replaced by the concession workers at the stadium.

It gets worse.

Here’s what Brian Cashman said about Voit:

“Kind of like the starting NFL quarterback who goes down early in the year but by the time he gets back the position is gone,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Sunday on MLB Network Radio. “He’s obviously caught up in our attempt to upgrade this roster. It’s unfair to him, but I was staring at a decision of waiting until he knocks the rust off or take the opportunity that’s in front of me in acquiring (Anthony) Rizzo.”

Jesus.

Everyone in the organization is pretending as if Luke Voit is already off the team while the man is rehabbing his ass off attempting to get back to the majors for their late-season playoff push.

For a team that typically doesn’t answer questions directly, Brian Cashman and Aaron Boone are having no problems throwing Luke Voit under the bus and also driving the bus.

BUT, there is a spot for Luke Voit on this team and it’s right where Gardner is standing.

Get Brett Gardner the fuuuuuuuuuck out of here. Gardner is batting .199. He’s supposed to be known for his speed. He has 1 stolen base. And he is completely lost in the outfield.

Joey Gallo can play centerfield. Giancarlo Stanton can play leftfield. Luke Voit can DH.

Brett Gardner can watch the game from the bleachers.

It’s that easy. It’s time to retire the elderly man.
