All eyes are on the 6-5 Los Angeles Lakers after a loud offseason of acquiring every player born in the 80s and trading for Russell Westbrook—the destroyer of backboards. The star trio of LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Westbrook have the most national attention but the true star of this team is the jab step god, Carmelo Anthony.

On Monday night, the Lakers beat the Charlotte Hornets 126-123 in overtime mostly thanks to Carmelo Anthony coming off the bench and bombing 3’s left and right.
Here’s Melo’s statline from the W:
- 37 minutes
- 29 points
- 9-for-13 shooting
- 7-for-10 from 3
- 4-for-5 free throws
- 3 rebounds
- 1 block
- 1 steal
- +13 plus-miuns
This 37-year old Top 75 player of all time is shooting 50% from the field and 52% from 3. Somehow after 2 decades in the NBA, Carmelo has transformed himself into an even better shooter than he was 10 years ago.
Unfortunately, Carmelo having the best shooting season of his life will all go to waste because he’s playing next to a guy who is having one of the worst shooting seasons of his career.
Russell Westbrook to a reporter asking about the final possessions: “You saw it. Don’t ask me questions you know the answer to. You seen it. I lost the ball. I missed a three. There’s nothing to it.” pic.twitter.com/7aeYFlwxFH

At what point do we stop applauding Westbrook for ‘playing hard’ and acknowledge that going 100mph with zero control is a bad skill set. His decision-making is terrible, especially late in games. His shot selection is disgusting and he leads the entire NBA in turnovers. That’s without getting into his defense, or lack thereof.
With LeBron and AD taking turns wearing suits on the sidelines, Carmelo Anthony is out there on his own next to Kent Bazemore and Russell Westbrook running around doing nothing.
We were surprised to see the Phoenix Suns make the Finals last season but if Denver is injured or beating up the Miami Heat and the Lakers are relying on Lala’s estranged husband, don’t be shocked when like, the Memphis Grizzlies get swept in the Finals.
