There is nothing more infuriating than when a sports story crosses into the political realm and more specifically, under the microscope of conservative reactionary sociopaths who have no actual core beliefs and simply repeat the same Fox News garbage they know their incel audience likes so they can keep purchasing the weird testosterone pills they advertise on their podcasts.
After 10 months in a Russian prison, because she had a little weed on her, Brittney Griner is finally free and heading back to America. You would imagine a universal celebration. A woman who has won an Olympic gold medal for the United States of America being released from a brutal Russian prison following a bullshit arrest for a drug that most citizens have in their systems right this second.
Nope.
Some people were disappointed that in order for America to obtain Griner, they had to give up international arms dealer Viktor Bout aka The Merchant of Death. Suddenly, the worst people you know became global diplomacy experts. I don’t know shit about how their prisoner swap goes but I won’t pretend to know if we ‘won’ or lost this trade. A woman who did nothing wrong is free. That’s all that matters right now.
There are other people who started talking about some marine who apparently is also imprisoned in Russia. The huge difference is Brittney Griner was imprisoned for smoking mid and Paul Whelan was imprisoned for like, real-life actual crimes that get you behind bars.
Paul Whelan is a war criminal who assaulted and stole $10,000 from Iraqi civilians. You know all those stories of the nasty shit soldiers were doing in Iraq to random local families? Yea, that marine in Russia is one of those dirtbags.
But Britney Griner didn’t stand for the National Anthem or some nonsense so she’s worthless according to these sickos. They have made it clear they value the white guy who murders and robs brown people over the black lesbian ‘drug addict’ who doesn’t weep and cheer at the sound of the Star Spangled Banner.
The only discussion we should be having right now is about her basketball career. These people will shit on the WNBA and its cultural impact but have spent the last 10 months talking nonstop about a WNBA player.
So let’s focus on the basketball element of this. Last season, the Phoenix Mercury finished with a 15-21 record. They made the playoffs despite being 6 games below .500 but were quickly bounced by the Las Vegas Aces who would go on to win the whole damn thing.
I’d have to imagine that Phoenix would look totally different if Griner was on the court defending A’Ja Wilson.
But if she doesn’t want to play in this league again I would totally understand. One of the greatest basketball players in the history of women’s sports is free. Let’s just talk about her playing basketball or shut the fuck up.
