Ja Morant will be starting next season with a 25-game suspension following an Instagram Live video where he was waving a gun just a few months after he was already suspended for doing the same lame shit.
Some people fear Ja isn’t learning his lesson and he refuses to grow up and represent the NBA properly instead of pulling out guns whenever a camera is in his face.
With an influx of European stars, Ja is this country’s last hope to have a guy with an American accent at the All-Star game.
But after finding out Shelby County, Tennessee has issued a warrant for his friend’s arrest, I have total faith in Morant and his new found maturity.
Last year, Ja and his friend, Davonte Pack, were accused of beating up a teenager at Ja’s house over a game of basketball.
The fight started because Ja claims the kid bounced the ball in his face. Yes, the professional basketball player started swinging on a high schooler because he was embarrassed about a ball hitting him in the face.
I think also stepped on a rake and a piano may or may not have fallen on his head.
But it was Davonte Pack who punched the kid so hard he collapsed to the ground.
Or at least, that’s what Pack said.
While Ja is claiming self-defense against balls in his face, Pack said he didn’t feel physically threatened when he threw a punch.
And that right there is how I know Ja is ready to take his NBA career to the next level.
Ja’s biggest problem was riding around with his friends and all of them behaving as if they’re all equals. Ja signed a 5-year $197 million contract. He is the face of an NBA franchise. He and his lame little friends are not equals.
When shit hits the fan and it’s fight or flight time, Ja needs to be rushed to the car and the homies are there to square up and throw hands. It’s a sacrifice you make when you hang out with an NBA player. You get access to every room. You have women eyeing you even though you know for a fact you’re ugly as hell. You rarely even know where your wallet is when you go out because drinks are on Ja.
And in exchange for all that, you jump on any and all grenades.
There is no reason for Ja’s friend to admit to the police that he wasn’t defending himself when he punched a teenager to the ground. Morant just finally stepped up and let his friends know what time it was. If they want to continue rolling with the king of Memphis, they need to be ready to take the charges, even if this is 1000% Ja’s fault for trying to fight a kid still going through puberty.
No doubt in my mind Morant is still going to continue doing the dumbest nonsense every time he has one sip of alcohol but we’re no longer going to spend hours discussing it like his parents meeting with his guidance counselor because we’ll never find out about it.
Ja’s friends will take care of it. As they should.
Superstars do crimes and their friends do the time. As is tradition.
