The New Orleans Pelicans fired head coach Willie Green, following a 104-118 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers Friday night—the team falling to 2-10, sitting dead last in the Western Conference.
What went wrong in New Orleans?
Gayle Benson, the widowed owner of both the New Orleans Pelicans and New Orleans Saints—running both enterprises with the attention and care of an ICE agent hearing a brown person roll their r’s outside the local laundry mat.
Lawsuits from employees claiming racism, protecting a local catholic church with 600 claims of sexual abuse against them—as you read this, 101 Dalmatians are planning their heroic escape from Gayle Benson’s basement.
Both the New Orleans Saints and New Orleans Pelicans have 2 wins. Neither team may win again.
Willie Green never stood a chance.
Every day Willie Green showed up to work, he never knew which players would be healthy enough to compete.
Better organizations make the expensive commitment to the best medical staffs—equipped with the newest advancements in technology.
The Pelicans, consistently one of the youngest rosters in the league, cannot keep players on the floor.
It’s no coincidence the Pelicans made the playoffs two seasons ago when Zion Williamson played 70 games, Herb Jones played 76 and Brandon Ingram played 64.
12 games into the season and the Pelicans best two players—Zion Williamson and Jordan Poole—already injured.
Dejounte Murray still trying to return from last season’s Achilles tear.
The owner is too busy shielding pedophiles to invest in the infrastructure—leaving all responsibility to newly hired President of Basketball Operations, Joe Dumars—whose first order was to trade their unprotected 2026 first round draft pick to move up in the 2025 NBA Draft for forward Derik Queen—and the kid can hoop a little—but his skillset is immediately redundant when Zion plays.
Joe Dumars gave up what will most likely be a Top 10 pick in next year’s draft, a chance to select a potential All-Star—for a rookie who plays exactly like a player already on the payroll.
Willie Green took this chaotic circus to the playoffs twice, Zion’s appetite for chicken nuggets and BBLs be damned.
He deserves to coach in the NBA.
And I have the perfect location…
Fire Jamahl Mosley
The Orlando Magic are currently on a 3-game winning streak, re-climbing the ladder they stumbled down at the start of the race.
They held the Knicks to 107 (New York just scored 140 on Friday night against the Heat) and they held the Nets to under 100 (not as impressive as the previous Knicks win but still). Orlando’s defense is returning to last season’s shape.
However, the Magic have the 20th-ranked offense.
Orlando traded 4 first-round picks for Desmond Bane, hoping to add reliable perimeter shooting to their stagnant offense.
Nope, they’re still out there making jumpshots look like the hardest job in the country.
The 2023-24 New Orleans Pelicans finished with 49 wins (Mosley’s best season netting Orlando 47 wins in a weaker Eastern Conference), 11th in offensive rating and defensive rating 7th.
A team built around Zion and Brandon Ingram—two injury-prone characters who refuse to shoot behind the 3-point line—still almost Top 10 in both offense and defense.
Willie Green could maintain the Magic’s defensive intensity while unlocking more open shots.
Mosley’s current offensive system seems—from the outside—let Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner dribble forever until, hopefully, something happens.
The Detroit Pistons are at the top of the East, winning games with their entire starting 5 injured. Jalen Brunson is in a walking boot. The East is wide open. Every second Orlando allows Mosley to go through the motions, their championship window slowly closes.
Willie Green could have the Orlando Magic in the Finals.
This year.
Orlando, make the right decision.
