On February 5th, the Chicago Bulls traded Zach LaVine to the Sacramento Kings for Tre Jones, Zach Collins, Kevin Huerter and a first round pick (Sacramento traded De’Aaron Fox to the Spurs in this 3-team deal).

After 8 years, 3 head coaches and only 1 playoff appearance (a gentleman’s first round sweep by Giannis), Chicago dropped him off at a burning building—an organization that recently fired their coach and, again, traded their best player to San Antonio.

Little did they know lighting the beam every night would have such negative effects on their environment.

On Wednesday night, LaVine returned to the nebula where his All-Star career was born, and despite an efficient 30-point performance, Chicago won 126-113 over the Sacramento Kings.

The Kings didn’t stand a chance.

The Chicago Bulls remain unbeaten, 4-0, kings of the court.

Josh Giddey master class

Josh Giddey led the Bulls with a team-high +24 plus-minus.

His control of every offensive possession evident.

Giddey, given the keys to a new Bulls squad—full of motivated, focused and greatly improved young players—transforms Chicago into a nightly threat.

Giddey leads the break, advancing the ball up the court with urgency; in the halfcourt, capable of taking most defenders off the dribble to the rim, where he displays an array of cute and unstoppable little finger rolls—always keeping his head up, looking for open shooters and cutters.

Often defended by smaller guards, Giddey’s size allows him to survey the court openly without interruption.

All following Giddey’s playstyle—2nd in the NBA in assists—the Bulls employ a roster of guys who perfectly pair with Giddey’s talents.

But none of this is possible without Matas Buzelis evolving into modern-day Vince Carter.

Giddey and Buzelis combined for 47 points on Wednesday night.

Jason Kidd and Vince Carter rebooted.

Chris Paul and Blake Griffin remastered.

What I wish LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller were.

And all of this is early-season success without Coby White touching the court.

The team’s leading scorer last season is out with a calf injury.

Another 20 points is coming to this team.

Soon.

Pray for the NBA.

Good game, good effort, Zach

Zach LaVine probably didn’t have the career he hoped for.

Making 2 All-Star teams and competing in one of the most iconic dunk contest ever will bring him peace in the long run but as he actively drives to the Kings practice facility in Sacramento every day—with a squad full of misfit toys—I imagine all the injuries, and beefs with coaches and losing, has altered the perception of how great he truly is at the game of basketball.

12 years into his NBA career, still demonstrating moments of superhuman ability. Still splitting doubles and exploding to the rim with one dribble in traffic.

The only player on the Kings outside of Malik Monk willing to shoot a 3.

Here’s what LaVine did against his old work:

  • 30 points
  • 12-for-19 from the field
  • 3 rebounds
  • 3 assists
  • 3 steals

And here is he getting love from his ex:

That’s my coach of the year right there, bigging up a former player.

The Kings won’t win many games this season.

No one can protect the rim—Chicago Bulls casually sashaying into the paint whenever the mood struck them.

They’re 29th in rebounding—Russell Westbrook’s willpower no longer generating an auto-10 rebound night.

And they’re 26th in scoring—relying on midrange jumpers all game while other teams bomb 3’s on them.

One of their first possessions in Wednesday night’s loss was a Westbrook kick out to DeMar DeRozan, open for a 3.

Demar steps one dribble in to hit a contested long 2 one foot inside the arch.

Pure vanity for DeMar at this point.

Proving nothing to nobody.

Cool, you spend a lot of time in the gym. So does that guy who eats livers on TikTok. Who cares?

Zach LaVine is the only modern NBA player on this roster playing with pace, urgency and spacing, surrounded by cavemen slowly discovering the wheel.

Kings might never win again..
