It’s time to grade this trade. Spoiler: I don’t have many great things to say about Josh Giddey.
Oklahoma City Thunder: A+
The OKC Thunder almost made the Western Conference Finals this season. Replacing Josh Giddey—who was a -23 in their loss in 6 games to the Mavericks and was objectively the worst player in the Thunder’s rotation—with Alex Caruso, one of the best perimeter defenders in the league, makes this one of the biggest steals in recent sports history.
At 30 years old, Caruso is the adult in the Thunder locker room and a veteran with championship experience. Last season, the Thunder finished 3rd in defense and led the league in 3-point percentage. They just added an all-defense player who shot 40% from 3.
Chet Holmgren, Lu Dort, Jaylen Williams and Alex Caruso are putting opposing teams in the torture chamber. One of the best teams in the NBA just got a lottttttt better.
Chicago Bulls: D
Whenever you have a chance to acquire a 31% 3-point shooter who narrowly beat a statutory rape charge solely because the girl’s parents refused to cooperate with authorities, you just HAVE to do it.
Alex Caruso is one of the most desired role players in the NBA and Chicago gave him away for Josh Giddey. No first-round picks, no great upside players, nope. Josh fucking Giddey.
Weird case aside, I’m out on Giddey after seeing him so unfocused during the playoffs. It’s the postseason. All of the work you put into your craft is for these moments and Giddey was playing like he was chillin at the local YMCA getting a little run in after work.
Josh Giddey is truly one of the worst defenders in the league combining the wonderful strategy of being both unathletic as well as not really trying at all. That’s cool for Luka Doncic, a guy capable of scoring 73 points in an NBA game. Doesn’t work for Giddey who is a non-factor offensively anywhere outside of the paint.
No idea what he’s supposed to do on this Bulls team besides get in the way. I don’t think DeRozan and LaVine are in a hurry to share the court with this creep. Another L for the Bulls.
