Why is Everyone in the Media Taking Shots At Cam Newton?

All Cam Newton wanted to do was talk about quarterbacks and now he’s the butt of every joke. Why does the media hate this man so much?

Cam Newton is one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever throw a football but you wouldn’t know that from the way TV analysts talk about him like he’s some low IQ dork who can’t wrap his mind around the complexities of the NFL.

On a recent episode of Cam Newton’s podcast, Cam said Brock Purdy, Tua Tagovailoa, Jared Goff and Dak Prescott were ‘game managers’ and not ‘difference makers’. This isn’t even an outlandish take. A lot of folks believe these quarterbacks are greatly aided by the teams and coaching staffs surrounding them.

But his normal take made its way to ESPN’s Get Up where Kimberley Martin took it upon herself to dunk all over him.

 

Kimberley Martin instantly makes it personal by mocking Cam for not being on an NFL roster even though he’s in his mid-30s—the age most professional athletes retire.

Then she compares Cam to a lowlife internet commenter.

Then Dominique Foxworth jumped in the double dutch to get his shot in there too.

Dominique accused Cam Newton of clout chasing for clicks as if the job of a studio talking head is done out of purity and not ratings and views just like podcasts.

ESPN was so mad at Cam for calling Brock Purdy and Dak Prescott game managers, they brought his name up AGAIN later in the show. But this time, to make fun of his outfits.

Watching these clips feels gross.

It’s like watching a Fox News segment where multiple dweebs take turns mocking a black professional athlete for saying they don’t like Donald Trump or something.

This has big ‘shut up and dribble’ energy but at least the political analysts can justify pretending as if their political opinions are more deserving of being explored compared to an NFL player.

CAM NEWTON IS A FORMER NFL PLAYER TALKING ABOUT THE NFL.

But Kimberley Martin is just laughing at his thoughts like one of the greatest quarterbacks ever knows less about the game than she does.

The slander would make its way to Fox Sports as human booger, Jason McIntyre, gave his little 2 cents:

I apologize for even sharing this. I promise, you do not need to watch all 4 minutes of that bullshit.

 

Why is the media mocking Cam Newton?

Jason McIntyre sort of alluded to it at the beginning of his wack-ass rant when he says ‘every player has a podcast now’. Dominique Foxworth also says slick shit about Cam trying to go viral.

There’s an obvious lack of respect for players using their celebrity to create these top podcasts without seemingly doing all of the groundwork. See, Kimberley Martin thinks she’s on TV because she outworked everyone and followed all the steps and turned herself into a key journalist for the network. She’s on Get Up for her intelligent, well-thought-out critiques of players and coaches while Cam took a shortcut. See, he doesn’t need to be smart or intelligent. He’s famous already. He can say whatever comes to his head and get viewers and sponsors just from being him.

And I understand that.

I remember when I was a younger man who wanted to be a sports journalist and I noticed you how many former players were swallowing up all the TV jobs and most of them weren’t good at it.

Remember when Ryan Hollins would go viral every day saying the dumbest shit on First Take every morning?

There are a lot of sports media heads who believe former athletes, especially the more talented ones, are either incapable of properly articulating their opinions or worse, they are low-IQ fools whose opinions are to be ignored.

But is Cam Newton right?

From Cam Newton’s perspective, Cam is making all the sense in the world. He created a binary: game managers or game changers.

And when you look at the sport through this prism, he’s right.

Dak Prescott and Brock Purdy’s job is to do what is asked of them. They are amazing at it too.

When it comes to throwing a 5-yard slant to Tyreek Hill and then just standing around watching Hill outrun everyone to the endzone, Tua Tagovailoa is the GOAT. Hey, and maybe like, once or twice a game a play will break down and Purdy or Dak will scramble 4 yards for a first down.

But they are not game changers the way Lamar Jackson or Patrick Mahomes is. Or Seattle Russell Wilson. Or pervert Deshaun Watson.

And game changers don’t just need to be black guys who can move in the pocket. Prime Peyton Manning used to stand strong in the pocket throwing missiles into windows where only his receivers could get them.

Dak Prescott and Brock Purdy (and Jalen Hurts) are the best game managers ever but they aren’t them.

Cam Newton is weird and sure, his career ended early due to injuries that turned his arm into gazpacho but we don’t need to giggle at his opinions as if he is unqualified to share his thoughts or he’s a special needs high school kid who sneaks out of the basement classroom and bothers people in the cafeteria.

We can disagree with him without acting like Cam Newton isn’t one of the greatest to ever do it.

Athletes having podcasts is a trend. The great ones will stick around and the bad ones will disappear. No need to fear some sort of media revolution. Cam will probably get bored of this shit by the end of the month.
