When the subject of actually becoming a Jedi came up during a new interview with Digital Spy, Boyega sounded pretty sure his character won’t be one, citing franchise tradition as his main reason. Having said that, he adds that whatever becomes of Finn, he only hopes that it would be an interesting personal arc for him as he continues to settle in his new role as a member of the Resistance:
“Would I like to be a Jedi? I think it would be more interesting if they had more than one person be a Jedi – but I think that that is the one of the unspoken laws of Star Wars. They only have one who has to go away and train. … I hope it takes an interesting turn; not in terms of being a Jedi, but there are loads more stronger characters in the Star Wars universe that can go up against Jedi and they don’t necessarily have to be a Jedi. I would like to explore that more; the whole Boba Fett vibe. I would like to explore that for Finn, but who knows?”
Sooo there is no reason why Finn doesn’t get to hold a lightsaber. That moment in The Force Awakens when he gets the lightsaber from Rey and gets in a saber battle with that one Storm Trooper whose name doesn’t matter, was amazing for me.
Sure, Samuel Jackson was a Jedi but the prequels were trash. Being a Jedi wasn’t special. Everyone and their mothers had ‘midochlorians’ so it doesn’t matter. The second they turned the force into a virus, being a Jedi was no longer ‘goals’.
Plus, Samuel Jackson doesn’t represent me. He’s Sam Jackson. I am not.
But when Finn stepped up against Kylo Ren at the end of Force Awakens, I was more hyped than I’ve ever been in my life. Sure, he immediately got his back split in half but the imagery of him even holding that lightsaber was enough for me.
Buuut now it appears as though he will never be getting that lightsaber in his hands again in the next Star Wars movies. Apparently, in the Star Wars universe, the only way you are allowed to hold a lightsaber is if your last name is Skywalker.[1. Rey and Kylo Ren are obviously brother and sister. Duh.] Bullshit.
Wouldn’t it make more sense to make Finn special or chosen as well? He is the only Storm Trooper to turn on the First Order. Otherwise, wouldn’t every Storm Trooper have had the same freak out that Finn did when he saw all of his fellow soldiers exploding around him?
Finn should be a Jedi and no one can tell me otherwise. ‘He’s not force sensitive blah blah’. Fuuuck out of here with that nonsense. Put a lightsaber in his hands and let him rock.
Finn 4 President.
