Major League Baseball rules state that a season lasts 187 days and if a player spends at least 172 days on the major league roster than they are given one year of service time.
After six years of service time, a player can hit free agency so teams have gamed the system to keep their elite prospects in the minor league juuust long enough to steal a year of service time from them thus giving them an additional year of having that player produce at a major league level while paying him a minor league salary.
But Vlad Guerrero Jr is so clearly ready to be on the major league roster yet the Toronto Blue Jays continue to leave his texts on read.
So why isn’t Vlad Guerrero Jr on the Toronto Blue Jays yet?
Vlad is eligible to come up now. He’s surpassed the service time manipulation rules yet he is still on the Buffalo Bisons for some reason.
He’s batting .334 with 2 homers and 7 RBIs in 34 at-bats playing against minor league pitchers he’s so obviously better than. And the Blue Jays are below .500 right now. Thankfully, they’re playing in an AL East that is trash this season so they’re still very much in the mix.
If I had to take a guess, it’s because the Blue Jays think we’re dumb. They don’t want to make it seem that they are clearly manipulating these service rules so instead of calling him up the first day he’s available, they are waiting a week as to throw people off the scent.
Unfortunately for Toronto, we all know exactly what’s happening and they are the idiots. Especially considering that the San Diego Padres had the same exact opportunity to make this decision with their superstar shortstop, Fernando Tatis Jr and chose to keep him on the opening day roster as opposed to figuring out ways not to pay him.
The Padres are a surprising 12-11 sitting 2.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place in the NL West. Tatis is batting .293 with 6 bombs and 13 RBIs. Tatis is the heart of this Padres team and is outplaying Manny Machado.
The New York Mets made the same decision with their first base phenom, Peter Alonso and the Mets sit 1 game out of first place while Alonso hits .325 with 8 homers and 19 RBIs.
But nope, the Blue Jays decided to be cute and punt on the month of April so they can steal money from Vlad Guerrero Jr and now they’re trying to be cute with their fans by waiting a few extra days to bring him up.
Fuck the Toronto Blue Jays.
