Who Won The Trade: New York Liberty Send Tina Charles To The Washington Mystics

After six years of being the face of the New York Liberty, Tina Charles has been traded in a 3-team BLOCKBUSTER deal that breaks down as follows:

  • New York Liberty receive: Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, Tayler Hill, the 5th and 15th picks in Friday’s WNBA Draft.
  • Washington Mystics receive: Tina Charles
  • Dallas Wings receive: Washington’s 2021 first round pick

This is a HUGE move by the Mystics as they’re adding Tina Charles’s career 18.1 points per game to a front court that already includes the reigning MVP, Elena Delle Donne and last season’s new playoff star, Emma Meesseman.

Washington has size and scoring. Most teams are struggling to just find one of those. When it comes to entering the season as the defending champion, it’s always a smart move to acquire veterans that have never won a championship and allow their hunger to reinspire those that may have become complacent after just winning one themselves.

That veteran just happens to be a 7-time All-Star oh, and an MVP. Let’s just go ahead and pencil in Washington for the Finals again.

The New York Liberty now have 5 of the first 15 picks in the draft. With the No. 1 pick guaranteed to be Oregon star point guard, Sabrina Ionescu, New York has 4 more picks to add youth and depth to their roster.

Personally, I think there has to be a trade up coming because the Liberty does not benefit from bringing 5 rookies into camp. Especially in a year with a pandemic that will prevent the team from practicing and developing these young players.

Plus, they simply don’t have the roster space for 5 more girls. Why acquire all those picks if you’re going to end up cutting some of them.

I already wrote that Chennedy Carter should go No. 1, which won’t happen, BUT what if New York trades up for her and walks off with a backcourt of Ionescu and Carter?? I mean, that’s for sure not happening as they’ll probably look to acquire someone in the frontcourt to replace Tina Charles.

I promise you the Liberty win a championship at The Barclay Center before the Brooklyn Nets do. We’re about 18 months from Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant leaking rumors that they hate each other before one demands a trade and we’re about 18 months from Sabrina Ionescu winning the Finals MVP trophy.

Who won the Tina Charles Trade?

Shout out to the Dallas Wings for just throwing themselves into this for no reason and getting a first round pick next season. Sometimes it’s just nice to be included sometimes, ya know?
