Todd Bowles career with the Jets will end after this year, which comes as no surprise. After a tremendous rookie campaign with the Jets, going 10-6, us Jets fans were excited about the future, but instead, left us heartbroken and ready to move on.
Bowles has gone 13-31 since his rookie year and its time for the Jets to fire Bowles and move on to who I think would be the perfect hire for the Jets: Lincoln Riley.
Riley will be one of the most sought out coaches this offseason, but the Jets should make a push for him, here’s why:
He is one of the brightest offensive minds in football. He has produced back-to-back Heisman winners and one of the top offensives in the nation. An offensive minded coach is what the Jets need if they want Darnold to develop into their franchise QB. We have seen what a young, offensive-minded coach can do for a QB.
For example: look at Jared Goff. Many were writing him off after his first season with the Rams because he looked terrible, but once the Los Angeles Rams hired McVay, Goff has turned into a top 10 QB in the league. Riley could potentially do the same.
As the NFL moves towards more college-like offensive schemes, Riley’s spread concept would transition well into the NFL moving forward. Luring Riley away from Oklahoma will be hard enough, but if the Cleveland Browns are interested in hiring Riley, then the Jets may be in trouble.
The Browns can cause an issue because they have Baker Mayfield. Riley loved him at Oklahoma and would love to coach him again, but the Jets could sway him, if they spend money.
The Jets have a ton of cap space and if they use it to upgrade their offense with weapons for Darnold, then the Jets should be in good shape.
The Jets future rides on who they hire next as their head coach and whoever they hire, needs to be offensive minded to help our QB grow into our franchise QB. Go Jets!
