true detective season 3 finale

True Detective Season 3 Finale: Welllll, That Was Fucking Trash

10 Weeks of conspiracy theories and overthinking and trying to discover what’s really going on behind the death of Will Purcell and the disappearance of Julie Purcell and in comes the finale to pretty much say ‘lol, got you. None of that matters’. Sweet.

The episode starts with Hays finally meeting the big bad Hoyt. The man at the top of the chain. The kingpin. The wealthy man who must’ve been involved in some bigger pedophilia conspiracy. The man who was funding the whole operation.

And it turns out he genuinely had no real idea what was going on. Seems like just a drunk rich guy who is mad at Hays for killing Harris James but doesn’t fully understand what was going on between the two.

Pretty big red flag for what would come from the remainder of the episode that spent more time in the original 1980’s timeline re-hashing Hays relationship with Amelia for reasons I can’t even comprehend.

In 2015, old man Hays and old man West casually talk to Harris James’s widow, who doesn’t seem alarmed at all that two elderly detectives are asking her about her husband’s ‘disappearance’ 15 years prior.

Then the geriatric Hardy Boys just walk on into Hoyt’s old manor to see the ‘Pink Room’ themselves. It would appear as though in 2015, Hoyt foods is no longer a thing and their massive home is just an unkempt ruin full of kidnapping evidence. Conveinent as fuck.

And then the case is wrapped up in a bow when they meet up with Junius Watts, who is just waiting 15 years for the boys to come so he can meticuliously explain that as the house manager of the Hoyt Estate, he helped Isabel Hoyt basically purchase Lucy Purcell’s daughter after she lost her own daughter and while Isabel was playing with little Julie Purcell, she lost her cool and accidentally killed Will by pushing him and him hitting his head on a rock or some shit.

No big pedohpile ring. No Yellow King. No connection to True Detective Season 1. Just a fairly reasonable transaction that ended with an accident that killed one of the kids.

And before you can take a step back and think to yourself ‘this is bullshit’, we are waterboarded with the end of the Hays and Amelia’s relationship in the 80s and then like, an awkward proposal in the end. Love, man.

We don’t learn if Amelia was truly an ambulance chaser that was using Hays for information for her book. We don’t even learn what happened to her and why she’s not in the 2015 storyline.

All season long, whenever old man Hays tried to ask his son where his daughter is, his son freaks out and gets pissed as if to imply there was some big fallout or even worse, she’s not alive anymore either.

Nope, she shows up and gives Hays a fucking ride when he drives somewhere and forgets where he is. Apparently, she just moved out of Arknasas and had her own family. That’s it. Why was his son so mean to his dad with dementia? Why didn’t he simply ever say ‘she moved, dad’.

And that’s why this finale is trash.

There is a difference between a ‘misdirection’ and intentionally leading the audience on. Clearly, this season was some attempt to point and laugh at conspiracy culture and Serial podcasts and Making a Murderer shows and the Pizza Gate nonsense we consume.

They even used that documentarian to connect dots FOR the audience. She is the one who researched the dolls and saw that it was related to pedophilia rings. She connected it to the Yellow King in Louisiana. Not us.

And then this show was like ‘hahah you idiots, you fell for it’ but it’s not like the audience made that leap themselves. The show put all of that information in front of us. We were literally trolled for 10 weeks only to find out that this show was about Hays’s relationship with his wife(??)

Also real quick, why would Junius Watts aka Mr. June aka Watts aka the black man with one eye, not just call the police when they accidentally killed Will?

It was an accident and there wasn’t actually a kidnapping. They were allowed to hang out with Ms. Hoyt. Why would Harris James straight up MURDER Tom Purcell when he found the Pink Room? What an extreme overreaction to again, an accidental original crime.

Everything about this show was setting up a massive finale but this show purposely tricked us into watching this wack ass Law & Order episode. Season 2 was so bad and then Nic Pizzolatto was like ‘GOT YOU GUYS AGAIN HAHAHA SUCKERSSSS’. Never again. Fuck True Detective.
