Scrolling through the list of Oscar Nominations, there is an obvious omission from this year’s Academy Awards. There is a movie that has a swell of both critical and financial success that somehow has been totally ignored and will receive no recognition for its accomplishments.
The American Film Institute put this movie on it’s 10 Best Films of 2017 list. This movie was nominated for Best Picture from the Producers Guild of America. This movie grossed over $800 million worldwide. Straight cash homie.
WHERE IS WONDER WOMAN’S OSCAR NOMINATION?
Real talk, I don’t understand how Wonder Woman is getting ZERO recognition. Are we still pretending like superhero movies aren’t worthy of an Oscar because we don’t respect the source material? It’s 2018 and we’re still pretending like comic book action movies are less than? Oh. Kay.
Get Out was nominated for Best Picture which is a massive achievement. You can’t ignore the fact that the Academy would prefer black people not make movies. But they also aren’t high on horror films so Get Out is breaking down multiple barriers simultaneously. Salud.
But it’s almost as if the Acadamy figured that nominating Get Out was for the ‘people’ and they can go back to fapping to movies like Phantom Thread about ‘troubled and flawed’ successful white men. The Academy eats that shit up. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Fine, I will submit that a nomination for Best picture was a bit of a reach. It would’ve been ideal but I can understand why Dunkirk would get the nod over Wonder Woman. But to snub Patty Jenkins for Best Director seems like a Frank Underwood-esque 4th wall break to laugh about something evil you just did for the sake of being evil.
Patty Jenkins somehow made a movie about an Amazon Goddess be one of the most human movies of the year. I don’t even know how to fully reconcile with Patty Jenkins absence from Best Director as I love Paul Thomas Anderson, Christopher Nolan, Greta Gerwig, Guillermo Del Toro and Jordan Peele. The competition was stiff this year, to say the least.
But HOOOOW does Wonder Woman not even walk away with a single nomination for special effects or some shit. I mean, even Suicide Squad, the worst movie I’ve ever seen, won an Academy Award for makeup. We can’t honor the people in the wardrobe department for making Amazon women look phenomenal. The World War I historical set pieces are being ignored?
