The Roots Have 263 Songs Recorded For Their Next Album

Questlove says they’ll usually just keep making songs until they realize they’ve made enough good ones to fill an album, with that typically happening when they’ve recorded about 100, but this time they’ve just kept going. “Ideas keep coming,” Questlove says, adding that he promised they’ll cut it off by November 1 and pick out 14 of the best ones, but he thinks they might have 400 by then. Questlove pins a lot of the struggle to stop on the 2014 death of longtime manager Richard Nichols, who he says was always the “referee” who could tell them to stop when they’ve done enough.

I love The Roots. Everyone loves The Roots. They are the reason that Jimmy Fallon is still on the air. Seeing them play backup to rappers that come and perform on The Tonight Show is pretty dope and they are the best band on the planet.

Having said that, when I pull up an album on Spotify and it’s longer than like, 10 tracks, I am PISSED. Lil B just released Black Ken this month and it’s 1 hr and 39 minutes. Noooope. I cannot listen to an album that’s the length of an animated Disney movie. Let’s narrow this 263 song album to a powerful 9, please.

The Roots forever.
