Celebrating Steve Cohen Purchasing The New York Mets Is So Fucking Weird

There exists not a reality in which a billionaire is a good human. That is a person swimming in blood money off the backs of poorly paid labor and illegal activities that kind of just get shrugged off and sometimes rewarded depending on who you know in Washington, DC.

So it’s very odd to see the love and admiration that Steve Cohen is receiving for purchasing the New York Mets.

Obviously, the Wilpons were terrible owners that seemed incapable of putting together a competent franchise that could compete for championships every year. Still have no idea how they stumbled into the World Series in 2015 but I know it wasn’t the result of anything good the Wilpons did.

The Wilpons were cheap fools who doubled made their fortune in real estate and coughed a lot of it up in the early 2000’s thanks to Bernie Madoff’s ponzi scheme. They stumbled into their success and had no business running a baseball when they were so focused on cutting corners and saving pennies treating the Mets like they were a small market team in Hartford Connecticut.

I suppose the excitement about Steve Cohen is that no one has ever described him as cheap so we are to believe that he’ll spend over the luxury tax and bring in the best players. Sure. Shrug.

And before I shit on Steve Cohen, it’s important for me to say life is better without the Wilpons. Chief operating officer, Jeff Wilpon, was quoted telling an unmarried pregnant woman “when she gets a ring, she’ll make more money and get a bigger bonus.” That’s some Michael Bloomberg level weird unnecessary discrimination.

Fuck Jeff Wilpon.

Steve Cohen has been investigated for insider trader like, often. He’s paid a $1.8 billion settlement in 2016. That wasn’t that long ago that he had to cut a check to the SEC because he was stealing money with illegal privileged information.

After his war with the government, he spent trucks of money donating to Republican candidates with the hopes of them allowing him to just do his evil without being bothered with laws and consequences.

Yes, he obviously isn’t the only MLB owner that donated to the Trump campaign but yea, I’m not in a hurry to add more. People tend to forget this but you actually do not have to support and celebrate real life villains. And I can’t call out Jeff Wilpon’s sexism without pointing out that Cohen’s hedge fund, Point72, had a 2018 lawsuit from female employees that claimed they made less money than the men and constantly had their looks judged by their male coworkers.

Teams tend to mirror their owners and there is nothing about Steve Cohen that should make Mets fans think that they’ve suddenly found a savior. This asshole was sued for hiding millions of dollars from his ex-wife in a divorce. I have no idea what this man cares about outside of just making life worse for the people around him in order to improve his own life like, slightly.

It’s almost as if….every billionaire is bad. Hm.
