People Angry At Montrezl Harrell For Calling Luka Doncic a ‘Bitch Ass White Boy’ Proves Exactly What People Do Not Understand About Racism

During Thursday night’s playoff game between the Los Angeles Clippers and the Dallas Mavericks, Montrezl Harrell and Luka Doncic got into on the court and some words were exchanged including Harrell calling Luka Doncic a ‘bitch ass white boy’ which was hilarious but the Internet did what the Internet does best and they robbed all fun from this moment by turning this into some grand display of racism. Vomit.

Instantly this turned into a bullshit argument of ‘what if this were the other way around?’ as (white) people called for the suspension of Montrezl Harrell. Faux outrage directed at the NBA for their social justice work while not disciplining Harrell for his ‘racist’ remarks on the court.

The whole debate is wildly infuriating and genuinely insulting if you truly care about racism or understand it and its effects on entire communities and generations upon generations of black people.

Let’s start with the fact that history is important when discussing race. Racism exists due to centuries of one group of people having all the power and the dehumanization of anyone that doesn’t look like them.

So yea, you are correct. If Luka called Montrezl a ‘bitch ass black boy’ it would be horrendous and a far bigger deal. Because there is a history of white people using black people’s skin tone to oppress and invalidate them.

People that want Harrell removed from the NBA bubble in handcuffs are the same people that say that they’re ‘color blind’ and the only way to solve racism is to stop acknowledging people’s skin color entirely. It’s why they’re so uncomfortable with the phrase ‘Black Lives Matter’. They don’t want to hear about skin color.

But it’s that attitude that has allowed racism to exist for this long. By pretending like we’re all equal and that it’s actually black people who make everything about race, they are doing two things: 1. They are putting the onus on black people to fix racism. If we are the ones complaining about race all the time, why don’t we do something about it? It’s a way to tell us to ‘stop playing the victim’ because they don’t want to keep apologizing for being white and 2. They are distancing themselves from all of the policy and legislation that disproportionately helps them and makes life worse for brown people. ‘The laws certainly cannot be racist because I do not see race. Everyone is an individual and can overcome anything’.

To truly fix racism you have to see color and how people of darker complexions are systemically treated less than those of lighter ones.

If Luka called Harrell a bitch ass black boy it would awful because of the implication that being black is a bad thing. If a black person calls a white person ‘white’ it isn’t loaded with an entire history of oppression. It’s simply a statement of fact. No white person has ever been offended by being called white.

That historical power dynamic is where racism comes from. But if you’re making the ‘what if it was the other way around’ argument then you are fully aware of what you’re doing and it’s gross. Equality doesn’t mean that no one has a race and calling someone white boy should be treated just as bad as calling someone black boy. That’s not equal. Equality is the freedom for Harrell to call Luka a white boy on the basketball court without being dragged by his neck and hanged after the game.

This is what people continually get wrong when discussing race in this country. We cannot ignore history. None of these events happen in a vacuum. We cannot ‘color blind’ our way into true genuine equality. There are thousands upon thousands of black people who are alive today that weren’t allowed to vote in their lifetimes. This shit wasn’t that long ago.

It’s not running away from race that will unite people but leaning in and discussing and understanding WHY there’s a massive difference between white boy and black boy. Understanding the patterns and behaviors that led us to this moment. You cannot unify groups of people that all look different by ignoring that one of those groups used to enslave and rape the other group on a daily basis.

Everything that has happened matters.

And this is probably the most important thing I need to tell a lot of people who think Montrezl Harrell should be arrested: white people are not victims. Of anything. Not today. Not ever. I know how frustrating it must be to see black people marching in the streets and being jealous that you don’t have a cause in your life that you’re anywhere near as passionate about but it’s okay. You can join in. You’re allowed. You don’t have to pretend to be victims or grasp for fake inequalities.

Oh, and Luka Doncic actually is a bitch ass white boy so Montrezl Harrell was just saying facts.
