Ozzie Albies Just Signed One of the Worst Contract Extensions in MLB History

Major League Baseball owners are literally super villains. This Ozzie Albies contract extension should be illegal. What the hell just happened?

Ozzie Albies has agreed to sign a 7-year $35 million deal with two option years that could max the contract to $45 million. Word. Very team friendly deal. Smart of the Atlanta Braves to make this happen.

Here’s the problem, Ozzie Albies is only 22-years old and is projected to become one of the best infielders in baseball. He finished last season batting .264 with 24 homers and 72 RBIs. He finished 4th in the National League in runs scored and he was one of the best defensive second basemen in the game. He was an all-star.

Again, he’s 22 years old. He just signed a 7-year extension for $35 million that will prevent him from becoming a free agent until he’s 30. All of his prime years will earn him around $5 million a year. At age 22, as he quickly becomes one of the best second basemen in the league, he’ll be making $20 million less than 36-year old Robinson Cano.

Rougned Odor makes more than Ozzie Albies and will make more than him for at least 7 years now.

The Atlanta Braves recently gave their big young star Ronald Acuna Jr a $12 million extension which again, robs Acuna of his prime earning years. With Bryce Harper, Manny Machado and Mike Trout making hundreds of millions of dollars, Acuna, who is on pace to be just as big as those players, is getting bent over a barrel with his extension.

The owners have all joined forces to destroy MLB free agency. Craig Kimbrel and Dallas Keuchel are still free agents because owners decided that they won’t pay anyone over a certain threshold.

So now young players are so terrified of reaching free agency that they’re taking extensions now that completely rob them of future earnings.

Fuck rich people.
