Tuesday, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an environmental activist whose recent work has focused increasingly on baseless allegations that vaccines are unsafe and can injure a statistically miniscule population of “medically fragile” children, appeared at the California State Assembly beside an unlikely scene partner: actress Jessica Biel. In a series of Instagram posts, first reported in Jezebel by Anna Merlan, the two posed with activists, legislators, and miscellaneous bureaucratic architecture. In the caption, Kennedy called Biel “courageous.”
The duo had come to lobby against SB 276, a California state bill that would limit medical exemptions from vaccinations without approval from a state public health officer. The bill has been decried by anti-vaxx advocates like Kennedy and vaguely critiqued by current Governor Gavin Newsom, over official estimations that it would reduce medical exemptions by nearly 40%. Being anti-vaccination is dumb.
This isn’t worth arguing at this point. There is far too much evidence that has debunked that nonsense. This isn’t about to be a long article debating the validity of the well-documented research.
Good for Jessica Biel for using her platform for something she believes is the right thing. It is absolutely the wrong thing and she is doing far more harm than any good she thinks she’s doing because she saw some Youtube doc that she found on a Reddit forum about conspiracy theories.
I enjoy (the first season of) The Sinner that Biel stars in and executive produces. But most importantly, I love her role in Bojack Horseman as Mr. Peanut Butter’s ex-wife who constantly lists off all the roles she’s had that no one remembers her from.
Kind of wish she’d focus her energy into those projects that are positive and not killing children so we don’t have to realize that she and Justin Timberlake’s kid is going to catch the plague and kill everyone in their elementary school.
Please do back to making murder mysteries and making fun of yourself on Bojack and let Robert Kennedy Jr. jump out of this plane without a parachute by himself.
