Saquon Barkley was drafted No. 2 overall in 2018. He has 461 rushing yards this season. Last week he ran for 1 yard on 13 carries against the New York Jets.
Barkley has 85 rushing yards in his last 3 games. This is the part of the season where weather conditions make the passing game more difficult so teams start relying on their running backs more.
85 yards in 3 weeks.
No. 2 overall draft pick. He has 361 fewer rushing yards than Lamar Jackson. He has just 43 more yards than Kyler Murray.
Oh, I’d be remiss to not mention that he’s the 6th highest paid running back in the entire NFL. He’s ranked 28th in rushing. Just narrowly ahead of 4-foot-9 Kyler Murray.
*screams at top of lungs* BUST.
I almost forgot to mention that Mr. All-Puporse—the man who is supposed to be able to rush for 100 yards and catch for 100—had 1 reception for 2 yards against the Bears on Sunday.
But it’s unfair to totally put the blame on Saquon Barkley when the brain trust of GM Dave Gettleman, head coach Pat Shurmur and offensive coordinator Mike Shula, has put him in zero positions to succeed.
Look at exhibit A:
What in the fuck is this?
It’s 3rd and 1 with the ball on the Bears 21 yard line and 2:28 left in the half. Down a touchdown, all you need is 1 yard to extend the drive and give your team a new set of downs inside the red zone.
Instead of simply running the ball up the middle, the Giants call a halfback screen with ZERO blockers ahead of Barkley and three defenders between him and the first down marker.
What chance did Saquon have?
But the irony of this play call is that Pat Shurmur is typically deadset on rushing Saquon up the middle. He has one of the most dynamic running backs in the NFL and he constantly runs 1st and 10 and 2nd and 9 runs directly up the middle as opposed to getting Saquon out in space to make a play.
And when he finally just needs a quick 1-yard gain, ALL OF A SUDDEN, he wants Saquon to make a play in space but designs a play with no chance of success.
And Dave Gettleman, you arrogant bitch. This man has done nothing but make strange hypocritical and redundant moves since taking over.
Trading away Odell Beckham only to immediately sign Golden Tate thus having the most expensive wide receiver cap hits in the NFL and the most expensive of those cap hits wears a Browns jersey.
The Giants signed Nate Solder and made him the third highest paid left tackle in the NFL.
Dear every NFL GM: when the New England Patriots move on from a fundamental player on their team, it’s because he can’t play anymore. Maybe don’t back up a Brinks truck to his garage.
Nate Solder leads the league in sacks allowed.
This team desperately needs offensive line help and Gettleman went out there at this year’s trade deadline and acquired the Jets worst defensive lineman who will be a free agent in 3 months. They gave up draft picks for 3 months of a bad defensive end.
And unfortunately, his biggest mistake will most likely be wasting the No. 2 overall draft pick on a running back knowing damn well he had no offensive line.
That’s like shopping for baby clothes and a baby strollers and shit when you don’t have a baby. Sociopath behavior. Arrest Gettleman.
I don’t believe that the Giants necessarily needed Sam Darnold or Josh Allen but I know they sure as hell did not need Saquon.
And let’s put the microscope back on the No. 2 overall draft pick who had 3 carries that went for at least a 4 yard loss. Saquon Barkley’s refusal to simply run forward and instead, continue to peel around backwards and try to dodge every single tackler individually has made him an awful running back.
Spin moves and jukes work one-on-one in space. But in the backfield, your job is to get positive yardage. The Giants will never have success if they’re constantly throwing on predictable 3rd and longs because on first down Saquon Barkley didn’t run up the hole and decided to dance in the backfield and lost 5 yards.
Everything is connected.
The GM put together an atrocious offensive line that can’t keep defenses out of the backfield and the coaches have no plays to work around their porous offensive line and Saquon Barkley won’t take positive yards when they’re in front of him.
Bad organizations reach for flawed players and do nothing but accentuate those flaws. If the Giants drafted Lamar Jackson, let’s just say uh, he wouldn’t be anywhere near the MVP conversation.
Saquon Barkley is a bust and sadly, the Giants are accelerating his failure. If Barkley is out of the league in 5 years, it’s because Dave Gettleman and Pat Shurmur made it so.
