HBO has found the cornerstone of its Game of Thrones prequel.
Two-time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts has been tapped to star in the as-yet untitled project from creator Jane Goldman and George R.R. Martin.
The drama, picked up to pilot in June, is set thousands of years before the events of the HBO flagship. The story chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. A logline from the network teased the plot without divulging any specifics: “Only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend — it’s not the story we think we know.”
Watts will play a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret. The character’s name is not being revealed.
As yes, Naomi Watts, known for her spectacular performances in ____ and of course who can forget her commanding leading role in ____ will now be the face of the brand new Game of Thrones prequel series.
Actually i shouldn’t talk all of the shit. Naomi Watts was good in that Alejandro González Inarritu movie like, 15 years ago. I think we can all agree that her best role was when she played herself on Bojack Horseman.
Also, I don’t think anyone saw Sean Bean being cast to star in Game of Thrones as a reason to get excited. These George R R Martin stories are so good that you can literally put Tommy Wiseau from The Room as the lead and he’d walk away with an Emmy.
I won’t pretend to know anything about the prequel stories or what Westeros was like before the Game of Thrones series. I imagine if you are casting a blonde woman then she’s going to be a Lannister and if you’ve ever been next to me at a bar, then you know I’m Team Lannister til I die so I’m all in on Naomi Watts here.
Be right back, going to go rewatch all of Game of Thrones for the next few days. Call me when the Knicks win again so I can continue to say that they’re better than LeBron and the Lakers.
