Warner Bros and DC are in the early stages of another Batman Universe spinoff movie, this one telling the origin story of the signature villain The Joker. The studio has set The Hangover‘s Todd Phillips to co-write a script with 8 Mile scribe Scott Silver. Phillips will direct the movie, and Martin Scorsese will produce it with Phillips. This will be the first film under a new banner that has yet to be named in which WB can expand the canon of DC properties and create unique storylines with different actors playing the iconic characters.
This is the smartest move that Warner Bros and DC have made in a solid decade. The DC Extended Universe is four movies deep and it’s already a mess. I will take any and all opportunities to remind everyone that Suicide Squad is the worst movie ever. That’s just an objective fact.
The idea of telling self-contained stories with DC properties and interchangeable actors is a genius response to their inability to compete with Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. The world doesn’t need to see the same actor play Batman every single year. We just need Batman.
We don’t however, need a Joker origin movie but this could potentially be a great start to these one-off films. The Joker is a character whose origin doesn’t really add much to his actions. He was a failing comedian. He stumbled into crime. He fell into a vat of chemicals. Now, he’s a dick. Spoilers.
Regardless, I will be there opening night. See you all there.
