At HBO’s summer TCA presentation, president of programming Casey Bloys gave an update on the status of True Detective, which had been awaiting a Season 3 greenlight.
Bloys confirmed that Oscar-winning Moonlight actor Mahershala Ali has closed a deal to star in the potential third season of the anthology series. Bloys said he had read five finished scripts. “They are terrific. … I was very impressed and excited,” he said. “We are talking to directors, and when we have a director we want to hire, it will be a go.”
He noted that a third season of True Detective is much further along than a potential second installment of The Night Of.
True Detective is one of the best TV shows we’ve ever gotten from HBO. Regardless of what you feel about the second season, you’re wrong. The second season was fire. Sure, Vince Vaughn’s character was trying to be that season’s Matthew McConaughey and instead, he was that season’s Vince Vaughn and no one wanted that.
Enter Mahershala Ali, who is for sure the next big thing. After seeing him kill it in Luke Cage, I have no doubts that he’s going to absolutely kill it. Whether he has to stop the Yellow King or team up with Rachel McAdams at a weird sex dungeon party, I have faith in my man.
Can’t wait to see what struggling movie actor joins alongside in hopes of bringing their career back to the forefront. For every great Nicole Kidman performance in Big Little Lies, there’s a Colin Farrell in True Detective to cancel it out.
