Louis C.K. made an unannounced appearance at the Comedy Cellar on Sunday night, according to the club’s owner, performing for apparently the first time since he admitted last year to sexual misconduct with women in the comedy world.
He appeared around 11 p.m., said Noam Dworman, the owner of the Cellar, the Greenwich Village club with a long tradition of surprise appearances by famous comedians. Dressed in a black V-neck T-shirt and gray pants, he did a 15-minute set that touched on what Mr. Dworman called “typical Louis C.K. stuff” — racism, waitresses’ tips, parades. “It sounded just like he was trying to work out some new material, almost like any time of the last 10 years he would come in at the beginning of a new act.”
Mo Amer, another comic who was on the bill Sunday, said that for the crowd, “it was like a wow moment.” He, too, said he had no idea that Louis C.K. would return that night but that his material was “like, classic Louis, really really good.”
Louis CK is back, ladies and gentleman. Let us all rejoice. Louie made several women watch him jerk off, finally got called out for it after years of sexual harassment and was forced to leave the limelight for about 10 months until now because he’s BACK.
You really have to applaud Louis CK for sexually harassing women for years and doing it openly. It wasn’t a secret at all. He even joked about it in his stand up. When the fully fleshed out story came out revealing how he took his dick out in front of these other female comedians, Louie’s punishment was that he couldn’t perform for 10 months.
There seems to be an overwhelming belief that he served his time and he should be allowed back into the comedy world. None of that is true actually. Let’s talk about his ‘time served’.
Comedy is a career in which there is no ladder to climb or blueprint on how to get from Point A to Point B. There are no 4-year degrees in stand up. It’s really all about who you know and for a while, Louis CK was the No. 1 comic in the game. If it’s all about who you know, there was no one more important to know than Louie.
So whenever I hear someone say cavalierly ‘well those girls shouldn’t have been alone with Louie’ or ‘they should’ve left immediately when his dick came out’, it’s infuriating and a complete lack of understanding that these young comedians didn’t want their careers stamped out before they began by the most powerful man in the industry.
So again, he ‘served his time’. How? In the very literal sense, indecent exposure is an actual crime that he committed so no, legally, he didn’t serve any time. So what exactly was time served? He issued a half-ass apology and went on a cute little 9 month paid vacation.
Why should we welcome this man back?
We have no reason to believe that he’s made any amends or changed in any way. He went on stage this week and didn’t even mention that this whole scandal happened? I mean, I’m glad he didn’t go up there and make light of the situation but there’s no reason why he couldn’t take a minute to have a serious message about what happened.
The problem with Louis CK returning to comedy clubs is that comedy clubs is where the man was preying on these women. If I work at Applebee’s and after years of stealing out of the cash register I finally get caught and fired, it doesn’t matter if 10 months pass by and I ‘feel bad about it’. I’m not allowed to work at Applebee’s anymore.
Being a famous stand up comedian isn’t some right that you have. He hasn’t ‘earned’ a second chance at all. The punishment of not being famous for 10 months isn’t a punishment at all. Beat it, with your second chances.
Someone tweeted at me yesterday ‘he deserves the right to earn a living’. I suppose that’s true. But who exactly is stopping him from applying to the local home depot if he needs work so badly? Oh no, the millionaire is going to have trouble making his next million because he made girls watch him jerk off for years but NOW suddenly feels bad about it.
Get Louis CK OUUUUT of here. His victims literally received death threats for jeopardizing his career. Their lives were changed for the worse. Louis CK’s life today is exactly what it was a year ago. Are we cool with this?
There are consequences for your actions. Unless of course you are a famous man in which case you can do whatever you want. You can even become president. There are no rules for you.
Thanks for reading. Tweet to @TheLesterLee if you think Louis CK should disappear for ya know, forever. Also, go ahead and throw Deadseriousness a Like on Facebook so that I can keep the lights on around here at HQ.
