We are in the midst of the greatest offseason in WNBA history as the new CBA rule changes and increased salary cap, has generated a new wave of aggressive trades and signings that has culminated with the Phoenix Mercury trading three first round draft picks to the Dallas Wings for 2-time All-WNBA first team winner, Skylar Diggins.
Both teams desperately needed to make this move.
From Phoenix’s standpoint, injuries devoured their 2019 season and with Diana Taurasi getting older and oft sidelined with injury, the Mercury needed a new No. 1 scoring option to compete for a title. Skylar Diggins instantly fills that role.
She may not have the defensive versatility of the player she’s replacing, DeWanna Bonner, but she is without a doubt a bigger scoring threat. Although she missed the 2019 season due to giving life to the new messiah, Diggins was in the Top 10 in scoring with 17.9 points per game in 2018.
And on the heels of that missed season, Skylar Diggins came out and demanded a trade and alluded to some weird behind the scenes shit between her and the organization that I can’t help but think it had something to do with her playing while pregnant the year before and feeling mistreated and used by the Wings.
The new CBA gives paid maternity leave which is WILD that it’s 2020 and a business consisting of entirely female employees is just now offering paid maternity leave. Hopefully whatever happened in Dallas between the Wings and Diggins doesn’t occur again.
From the Wings perspective, they have the ultimate flexibility. Dallas enters the 2020 WNBA draft with picks numbers 2, 5, 7, 9, 15 and 21. They can either package these picks to acquire elite talent or they can throw a ‘fuck it’ out there and just run the whole draft. Give them every college basketball player.
The Phoenix Mercury are going to compete with Las Vegas and Los Angeles for the role of the best super team in the WNBA. The Dallas Wings are going to compete for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament and take out Geno Auriemma’s Huskies. As it was written.
