Reigning Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray hasn’t announced his intentions for 2019, but the Oakland Athletics are anticipating he will give serious consideration to the NFL.
Per Henry Schulman and Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, the A’s are expecting Murray to declare for the 2019 NFL draft.
Despite the possibility of Murray exploring his NFL options, one source told Schulman and Slusser it would not be “contractually significant” if he declares.
The New York Giants need a quarterback and they have the 6th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. That means there are five spots ahead of them giving other teams opportunities to trade into the Top 5 and select a QB before the Giants get the chance.
Unlike last draft, there aren’t a bunch of guys all equally good to choose from. It’s pretty much Dwayne Haskins or bust. I like guys like Drew Lock our of Missouri and I can pretend to like Daniel Jones out of Duke but Dwayne Haskins is the prize.
Enter Kyler Murray.
If the 2018 Heisman trophy winner enters the draft, then all of a sudden the Giants have some breathing room. Two things can happen and both of them are good for New York.
Either 1.) ESPN talks about how electric Kyler Murray is and convince NFL executives to trade up for Murray allowing the Giants to just sit at No. 6 and have Haskins fall in their lap.
At the end of the day, the Giants need help EVERYWHERE. So it doesn’t help their team to trade draft picks in order to move up to pick a quarterback that’s just going to sit behind Eli Manning all season anyway.
If Haskins drops to 6 then the Giants won’t have to give up anything and they can solidify the remainder of their roster to build a champion around their future star.
OR OPTION 2.) Fuck it, the Giants draft Kyler Murray and all of a sudden they have 5’8 Mike Vick running around tossing the rock to Saquon Barkley and Odell Beckham and the Giants suddenly become the most exciting team in NFL history.
It’s a win/win situation so yes please enter the NFL draft, Kyler.
Buuuut none of this matters because Giants GM, Dave Gettleman, is going to just pick a running back again and the Giants are going 3-13. Yay.
