James Cameron Calls Wonder Woman a ‘Step Backwards’

“All of the self-congratulatory back-patting Hollywood’s been doing over ‘Wonder Woman’ has been so misguided,” he told the outlet in an interview to promote the “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” re-release. “She’s an objectified icon, and it’s just male Hollywood doing the same old thing!”

Cameron has been recognized for his female protagonists, including Rose (Kate Winslet) in “Titanic,” Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) in “Avatar,” and perhaps most notably, Sarah Conner (Linda Hamilton) in “Terminator.”

“I’m not saying I didn’t like the movie but, to me, it’s a step backwards,” he continued. “Sarah Connor was not a beauty icon. She was strong, she was troubled, she was a terrible mother, and she earned the respect of the audience through pure grit. And to me, [the benefit of characters like Sarah] is so obvious. I mean, half the audience is female!”

This James Cameron quote is one of my favorite examples of when a guy calls something out for being sexist and somehow manages to come off wayyy more sexist than what he’s criticizing. It happens every once in a while and it’s beautiful. Ah, it’s delicious.

First of all, James Cameron calls Wonder Woman an ‘objectified icon’ so he already starts off with something that’s completely wrong. Literally no one I’ve spoken to, nothing I read, NO ONE likes Wonder Woman because she’s hot. The most anyone has said is that Gal Gadot is beautiful but homegirl used to be a model. She’s an actress. Yea, her face is nice. But people don’t love Wonder Woman because she’s hot. People love Wonder Woman because it’s a good movie.

So when you call Wonder Woman out for being objectified, what you’re actually doing is just saying that you personally want to bang Wonder Woman and you assume everyone agrees with you. It’s not ‘male Hollywood’. It’s you, Jimmy.

And then there’s the weird double down where James Cameron compares Diana Prince to Sarah Connor. It’s pretty cringeworthy because if your problem with Wonder Woman is that she’s too attractive then you’re saying that Linda Hamilton is ugly which makes me feel super weird especially since Cameron wanted to hump Hamilton so badly that he ended his marriage with Katheryn Bigelow to lay the pipe.

I love both Sarah Connor and Diana Prince. I would sleep with both of them, of course, but it’s not at all a factor when I think about how much I love Wonder Woman and Terminator 2. Guys like attractive women. You’re right Jimmy Cam. But you know what else guys like? Well made movies.
