“I don’t think most Americans, in their heart, want to be given something. I’ve spent a lot of time traveling around this country over the last four years. People want to work for what they get. So, I think that this idea of a guaranteed minimum is not something most people want. They want the ability to be able to secure a job. They want the ability to live in a country where’s there’s the potential for upward mobility.”
Before we snack on the delicious irony of the literal poster child for nepotism attempting to tell us that people don’t want things handed to them, let’s break down this nonsense rhetoric.
Conservatives love throwing out this ‘American Dream’ bullshit to shame people who need help. For them, Americans should build an empire out of nothing and all of the money they make will feel ‘earned’ because they didn’t need any government assistance.
But we’re not all starting from a position that affords us the opportunity to just work hard and be rich. Especially when the minimum wage that Ivanka Trump is disavowing isn’t enough to pay rent.
When conservatives are throwing out the idea of ‘upward mobility’ and ‘pulling yourself up by your bootstraps’ what they’re actually saying is ‘raising minimum wage and welfare programs cost tax money and please please please don’t tax my rich friends please’.
“I don’t think Americans want to be given something”. Ah yes, the millions of Americans buying loterry tickets every day would haaaate to be given free money. It would ruin their lives.
Stop letting rich people tell you that money doesn’t matter. Stop letting rich people guilt you for wanting a livable wage. And for fuck’s sake, don’t let Ivanka Trump, of all people, demoralize ‘unearned wealth’ when her entire bank account is the result of that exact garbage she’s standing up against.
