So excited to confirm the most thrilling news. Yes! It’s true! So incredibly lucky to welcome the sensationally talented Kristen Wiig to our Wonder Woman family. Can’t wait to finally work with one of my favorites. And SO excited by what we have planned. #Cheetah!!! @GalGadot pic.twitter.com/Gn0jICiIAH

At first glance, this isn’t the best casting choice of all time. Not only does Kristen Wiig not make much sense playing a villain in a comic book movie but the character that she was cast as is supposed to be a physical threat.
This isn’t the same as unexpectedly casting Heath Ledger as Joker because The Joker doesn’t need to get into a fist fight with Batman. Cheetah and Wonder Woman legit throw hands on a regular basis.
Having said that, no one is an action star until they star in an action movie. I can’t imagine people watched Lost in Translation and thought to themselves ‘Yup, Scarlett Johansson is going to star in two action movies a year for the rest of our lives’.
But DC has struggled in the past with villains. I still have nightmares of Jesse Eisenberg attempting to play The Riddler even though he was playing Lex Luthor, an astronomically different character and every scene he appeared in during Batman V Superman was torture. I’m pissed just thinking about it.
But Cheetah isn’t The Joker. She is a bit of an obscure villain for casual fans who don’t read Wonder Woman comics and is relatively unknown compared to The Joker. Everyone knows Lex Luthor so when Jesse Eisenberg fucked it up, it was extremely noticeable.
There isn’t a history of great Cheetah performances so Kristen Wiig can really make this character her own. In the comics, Cheetah is a spoiled rich waspy woman with a personality disorder. Kristen Wiig came up doing comedy and is now wealthy from the Ghostbusters check. That’s basically the same thing. She is Cheetah.
Plus, the villain in the first Wonder Woman was trash. The third act of that movie was gray and everything was on fire and I didn’t even know what happened. I think Wonder Woman punched a shitload of Germans in the face(?).
The bar is set incredibly low here for Kristen Wiig and if anyone can get a great performance out of her, it’s Patty Jenkins who literally transformed Charlize Theron into a monster and made me give a shit about Chris Pine, the lesser of Hollywood’s Chris’s.
So is casting Kristen Wiig as Cheetah in Wonder Woman 2 a bad idea?
I suppose it depends who you think is in control of this movie. If Patty Jenkins gets full authority then there is no doubt in my mind that she can squeeze the most of out Wiig. If DC gets their disgusting Suicide Squad hands on this movie then we can expect another Cara Delevinge weird ass witch performance that no one on the planet asked for.
Wonder Woman 2 will be great. Or it will be bad. Regardless, I will be there on opening night cheering any time that Gal Gadot does anything.
Thanks for reading. Tweet to @TheLesterLee if you think Kristen Wiig is a good choice for Cheetah. Also, go ahead and throw Deadseriousness a Like on Facebook so that I can keep the lights on around here at HQ.
