In His Smartest Career Decision in a Decade, Will Smith Won’t Be Returning For Suicide Squad 2

Even with the studio dating the next installment in the “Suicide Squad” franchise, Warner Bros. may already be losing one of the film’s biggest stars.

Even though his return had not been made official, sources tell Variety that Will Smith, who played Deadshot in the original, is not expected to return for the studio’s upcoming sequel. Sources say scheduling was the ultimate factor and that the decision was made on amicable terms between both sides with no hard feelings. (Variety)

Will Smith hasn’t been in a good movie since I Am Legend in 2007. That’s 12 years of Men in Black 3 and Collateral Beauty and After Earth and Bright and of course, Suicide Squad. (I really liked Focus because it made Will Smith look cool for the first time since like, the 90’s and Margot Robbie is a beast in everything but we’ll talk about Focus at length some other time).

Suicide Squad was bad and rushed and ugly and not fun at all so the decision to even cast Will Smith in the first place, made zero sense. Deadshot in the comics is a smooth-talking lethal conman. Deadshot in the movie was depressed and moody and kept crying about his daughter or whatever.

Now, the one upside to Suicide Squad is that James Gunn is set to direct the film. His claim to fame is taking a group of Marvel characters that no one’s ever heard of and making them one of the biggest franchises on the planet.

But the Suicide Squad is not Guardians of the Galaxy and DC has a totally different esthetic as Marvel, to their own demise. Also, quick shout out to DC for not locking Will Smith into a multi-film deal. They are so fucking bad at this whole movie-making thing.

Anyway, congrats to Will Smith for breaking the chains and finally making a good career move. This plus the filming of Bad Boys 3 that’s going on right now and we might actually have the old Fresh Prince back. Let’s goooo.
