In a shocking move, Disney has fired Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn from upcoming sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, after a conservative website dug up offensive jokes made by Gunn on Twitter between 2008 and 2011. The tweets included references to rape, pedophilia, and other hot-button topics like the Holocaust, AIDS and 9/11.
James Gunn will no longer be directing Guardians of the Galaxy 3 because someone dug up some old racy tweets that were clearly meant to be jokes but were certainly in poor taste. You can’t go after Jews and children when you get your checks from Disney.
Here is James Gunn’s response to being fired:
“My words of nearly a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative. I have regretted them for many years since — not just because they were stupid, not at all funny, wildly insensitive, and certainly not provocative like I had hoped, but also because they don’t reflect the person I am today or have been for some time.
“Regardless of how much time has passed, I understand and accept the business decisions taken today. Even these many years later, I take full responsibility for the way I conducted myself then. All I can do now, beyond offering my sincere and heartfelt regret, is to be the best human being I can be: accepting, understanding, committed to equality, and far more thoughtful about my public statements and my obligations to our public discourse. To everyone inside my industry and beyond, I again offer my deepest apologies. Love to all.”
Personally, I don’t think anyone’s job should be in jeopardy for tweets that took place in 2008. Twitter was the wild west back then. If you didn’t come with the best pedophile jokes then what were you even doing on the app.
Clearly, these are simply decade old bad jokes and don’t necessarily indicate anything about James Gunn’s beliefs. This isn’t quite the same as Roseanne calling Valerie Jarrett a monkey. That racist tweet wasn’t a bad joke from 2008. It was like, two months ago and Roseanne is a proud white supremacist.
James Gunn is just a lame dude who found a way to squeeze Kurt Russell, Sylvester Stallone and David Hasselhoff all in the same movie. And not all in the same movie in like, 1987. This was a 2017 production. This is the type of man we’re dealing with here.
Should James Gunn have been fired for those tweets?
But not for the obvious reasons. It shouldn’t matter that he made a joke about banging kids because he is a joke and has displayed no behavior that would lead us to believe that he’s pro-pedophilia. Although, it would be hilarious if he came out with a very pro-banging little kids- press release.
No, James Gunn should get fired because Guardians of the Galaxy is supposed to be the comedy franchise in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and those tweets show that James Gunn is the least funny human on the planet.
We can’t have this man writing the script for these movies with jokes like ‘laughter is the best medicine that’s why I laugh at people with AIDS’. Really makes you question who actually wrote those first two movies because it clearly was not Gunn. They should fire him for stealing their money and outsourcing the work to real funny people.
Fire James Gunn.
Thanks for reading. Tweet to @TheLesterLee if you think Marvel overrated to these old lame not funny tweets. Also, go ahead and throw Deadseriousness a Like on Facebook so that I can keep the lights on around here at HQ.
