Disney and Twenty-First Century Fox are closing in on a deal, and it could come as soon as next week, according to sources familiar with the matter.
CNBC has been reporting that Disney has held talks with the Rupert Murdoch-controlled media company to acquire its studio and television production assets, leaving Fox with its news and sports assets. Fox is also talking with CNBC parent company Comcast, but the talks with Disney have progressed more significantly.
The deal contemplates the sale of Fox’s Nat Geo, Star, regional sports networks, movie studios and stakes in Sky and Hulu, among other properties. What would remain at Fox includes its news and business news divisions, broadcast network and Fox sports.
Sooo Disney is now about to own both my childhood and everything that I currently love. I grew up reading X-Men comics and then watching The Simpsons at 7pm every single night. At first glance this is huge news.
For Marvel fans, we can all rejoice knowing that after Infinity War when Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth move on, the MCU can be rebuilt with the X-Men and the Fantastic Four. Dr. Doom is my favorite character of all time and he will finally be under the thumb of a studio that a churn out a good movie version of him.
Buuuut I’m pretty sure we are watching a monopoly being formed right before our eyes. Disney is starting their own streaming service next year to compete with Netflix and this Fox acquisition gives them more shows to stream such as American Horror Story and Fargo but this move pretty much makes Hulu completely irrelevant as all of their top shows are streams from Fox.
I should probably be careful about what I say about Disney because this time next year they are going to have torture robots in our homes making sure we are watching their streaming service. Mickey Mouse will be our next president and freewill will be a distant memory.
But those X-Men movies are going to be FIRE though.
Thanks for reading. Tweet to @TheLesterLee if you think Disney is going to kill us all before North Korea gets their chance. Also, go ahead and throw Deadseriousness a Like on Facebook so that I can keep the lights on around here at HQ.
