The Cleveland Browns announced Sunday that DeShone Kizer will be their starting quarterback in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 10.
Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com first reported that Kizer beat out Brock Osweiler and Cody Kessler.
“I feel comfortable with him,” head coach Hue Jackson said after the team’s third preseason game Saturday, per Cabot. “He has the right feel for me and for what I’m looking for.
If you’ve ever seen Brock Osweiler attempt to play football then this is the least surprising news of all time. Osweiler was traded from the Houston Texans in the offseason and is set to earn $16 million to hold a clipboard on the sidelines and I’m sure he’ll find a way to screw that up as well.
Kizer might be the next big thing. ORRR, he just competed in camp with Cody Kessler and Brock Osweiler and he’s simply the lesser of two evils. Regardless, I can’t imagine the Browns winning more than 7 games this season but they at least have found their ‘guy’ for the time being.
People say that giving the keys to a young QB early can help him gain confidence and respect in the locker room. I mean, look at Derek Carr in Oakland. Jack Del Rio gave him the keys and now he’s an MVP candidate. I’m certainly not saying that Kizer is going to win awards but it has to be a boost of self-esteem to know that the coaching staff thinks he’s better than Cody Kessler.
