Deadseriousness Top 10 TV Shows of 2018

Television is an ever changing medium in which shows are seemingly created to all be consumed in one sitting with cliffhangers at the end of every episode and a username and password required to get access to most of the drama.

I will admit, I did not watch as much television as I usually do. I slacked this year so the list will only be 10 shows long as oppose to 20 or 30 like previous years. I apologize. I let you down. 2019, I’m not leaving my house so I will have all the time in the world to catch up on The Bachelor and Supergirl and Peppa Pig and shit.

Disclaimer: I have not seen this season of The Good Place or The Handmaid’s Tale. I’m sure this would be a Top 12.

Also, quick honorable mention to Barry. A show I remembered after I finished writing this list. I’m not going to go back and change or add anything so yea. Here it is.

Here are the Top 10 shows of 2018:

10. GLOW

GLOW is a show about women finding themselves and their own power. Oh, and there happens to be professional wrestling or whatever. But it’s also an underdog story about a scrappy group of actresses trying to keep their television show on the air. But yea also there are like piledrivers and shit.

9. Collateral

Collateral was a quick 4-part miniseries that hit Netflix earlier this year and faded away without much fanfare but the North remembers. This is one of the few Carey Mulligan roles where she isn’t just playing the helpless love interest that things just happen to. She’s a detective who actually takes control of every situation.

But what makes Collateral important are the themes and issues that this show introduces such as immigration, sexual abuse and the way we protect (or don’t protect) our veterans. It can be a little preachy. I mean shit, even that sentence listing things off sounded preachy but in a post-Brexit world, let’s not stop talking about the way we treat immigrants.

8. Evil Genius

As someone who hopes to one day become king of the world, I love these stories about criminal masterminds that can manipulate impressionable people to do whatever it is they ask of them. Evil Genius was game tape for me.

Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong is my hero. Homegirl straight up had guys ready to go to prison for here. That is goals as fuck. Also as someone who used to deliver pizzas my biggest fear was that someone was going to strap a bomb around my neck.

7. Maniac

You could tell me that Maniac was the worst show you’ve ever seen or the absolute best and I’d say ‘yes’ although that might just a result of my refusal to argue about Netflix shows. But this show is a bit of a Rorschach test for what it is an individual enjoys in a television series.

For me, I appreciate the imagination, the bold colors and cinematography and the attempt to make a show about mental illness that seemed to come from someone who understands what it’s like to go through it but kind of missed the bullseye a bit but put Sally Field in something and it makes a Top 10 list over here at Deadseriousness.

6.  Sharp Objects

Amy Adams is the next one up. Every movie star gets their own HBO series these days and their dart hit Amy’s photo. There are a lot of cliches about the big city reporter returning to her hometown to investigate a local murder and she happens to have a drinking problem of course and blah blah.

But you can look past that will all of the spooky scenes of little girls rollerskating in the middle of the night especially considering that the killer is murdering little girls, probably little girls that rollerskate. You’re waiting for a Boogie Man to jump out the whole time.
