The New Orleans Pelicans fired Dell Demps earlier this season after he completely fumbled the Anthony Davis trade demand that resulted in both the Lakers and the Pelicans melting down.
Enter David Griffin, who constructed the Cavaliers team that went to the NBA Finals four consecutive seasons. A year ago, we all would’ve mindlessly attributed Cleveland’s success exclusively to LeBron James but after seeing what it looks like this season when the wrong team is built around him, David Griffin deserves a hell of a lot more credit for Cleveland’s prosperity for half a decade.
If anything, David Griffin proved he was capable of doing the most important thing that Dell Demps could never pull off: he kept his superstars happy.
There is no reason why Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins aren’t playing together for The Pelicans in the first round of the playoffs this weekend. David Griffin would’ve done whatever it took to maintain that tandem and keep them both satisfied.
Yes, Kyrie requested a trade to get away from LeBron but that was primarily due to the fact that Cleveland fired David Griffin, the one man in the Cavs organization keeping Kyrie’s weird flat earth brain pre-occupied with basketball instead of ‘free thought’ and Alex Jones live streams.
David Griffin was the best GM candidate available. It makes no sense that he was even unemployed this long. He traded Andrew Wiggins for Kevin Love. Have you ever seen Andrew Wiggins play basketball?? That was one of the most lopsided trades in NBA history.
So can David Griffin save the New Orleans Pelicans?
Well, the Cans were ranked 25th in attendance this season. If Anthony Davis walks in free agency next summer without receiving any assets in return, that arena will be empty and chances are, they’ll be playing in Seattle.
So Griffin is going to need to flip AD for something substantial.
If I were Griffin, I would completely ignore all of Los Angeles’s calls. Trading AD to LA doesn’t make the Pelicans better. It just turns them into the Lakers. They don’t need to reunite Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma and Julius Randle. We all saw that team already. They sucked.
Whoever gets the No. 1 pick needs to be called. Whether it’s Chicago, Atlanta, Phoenix or New York. The second the lottery ends, call the winner and offer them Anthony Davis for that first pick and all of their young assets.
Chicago is dumb enough to trade Lauri Markkanen, Wendell Carter and Zion Williamson for Anthony Davis.
New York has two max slots and if already determined that Kevin Durant is on the Knicks then chances are, New York will be desperate to add a star to play with him. Get Zion, Kevin Knox, and all of those Mavs first round picks. They’re going to have extra value if Kristaps Porzingis gets arrested for that whole rape thing.
Basically, any team that has Zion Williamson on their roster next season is an instant playoff tam so yea, if David Griffin is able to pull the trigger and acquire his draft rights then it’s over for you hoes.
