Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens confirmed Gordon Hayward was diagnosed with an ankle dislocation and fractured tibia in his left leg and will need to undergo surgery after a scary fall in Tuesday’s loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical reported Hayward will undergo surgery Wednesday night.
“We’re expecting a full recovery,” Stevens added Wednesday.
Hayward, who signed a four-year max contract with the Celtics in July, went down less than six minutes into the first quarter after a slight collision with Cavaliers forward Jae Crowder. He landed awkwardly and got his foot caught underneath his body, twisting it in a scary fashion. The game was delayed multiple minutes before Hayward was stretchered off the floor.
Sooo this is the fucking worst. I’m obviously not a Boston Celtics fan but I love the NBA and I want/need every team to stay healthy so I can watch the best possible games every night. That means I need the Celtics to be 1000% healthy every night.
Hayward broke his ankle 5 minutes into the 2017-18 season. It’s as if Boston never even signed him. They traded away Jae Crowder and Avery Bradley for Hayward and now he’s gone before he even gets to make any sort of significant impact.
So can the Boston Celtics survive without Gordon Hayward?
It depends on what your expectations for this team are. If you thought that this team could be the Golden State Warriors then that dream died when the stretchers jogged onto the court. Can they still win the Eastern Conference like they did last season?
I don’t think Cleveland is going to put enough effort into the regular season. LeBron James and Dwyane Wade will be taking many mid-season trips to Miami while Derrick Rose ices his knees for a month.
But the Celtics are simply a worse team than they were last year if Hayward isn’t on the floor. They are relying on Kyrie Irving who led the Cleveland Cavaliers to 3 consecutive losing seasons before LeBron James returned.
Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are going to have to develop into superstars overnight which isn’t impossible as they are incredibly athletic but I think it’s a little too soon for them to flourish.
Without Hayward, the Celtics will be lucky to get homefield advantage in the playoffs. The Raptors, Bucks and Wizards will benefit from bringing the same exact team back and will start the year hot while the Celtics planned all year for Hayward and will now have to completely change their identity as they play.
The Boston Celtics will finish 5th in the East.
