2020 was a fascinating look at how awful humanity can be when it matters the most. A global pandemic that could’ve been swept away if we all stayed home, washed our hands and shut the fuck up. We couldn’t do that.
But in the midst of the darkness rose one man who was dedicated to one thing and one thing only: maintaining the status quo.
Enter Barack Obama.
The former president had his fingerprints over every muffled revolution. If there was potential for any real change and progress, Obama came off the top rope to dead that shit swiftly.
After 4 years of dealing with one of the most blatantly corrupt presidents in American history, people finally got behind Bernie Sanders and his desperate desire to simply give everyone health care. Literally, all Bernie wanted to do was help us.
So naturally, Barack Obama put an end to his surge in the early primaries by calling all of the other candidates prior to Super Tuesday—the most important voting day of the primaries—and told them to drop out and endorse Joe Biden as to create a unified Democrat force against Bernie thus turning Bernie back into the ‘crazy outsider’ he was depicted as when he ran against Hillary in 2016.
In one night, Barack ended all political progress.
There was a global fucking pandemic. Only ONE candidate was offering us all medicine. And Barack told Amy Klobuchar, Rat Mayor Pete and Tom Steyer to drop out and all bend the knee in order to maintain the status quo.
Bernie would’ve truly put pressure on the way our shitty inefficient government operates and Barack dropped from the clouds to bring in Biden, the most milquetoast nothing of a man to halt any grand ideas that voters might have about what these politicians are truly capable of doing for us.
But nah, I’m being cynical. I’m looking too much into this. He was simply doing his former VP a solid and this wasn’t a flagrant dismantling of a real social movement. Silly me.
Anyway, let’s fast forward to the summer when the NBA was planning to bring the season back in a quarantine bubble in Orlando. Some players were reluctant to return to the court after weeks of protests against police brutality following the murder of George Floyd.
They inevitably decided to play basketball and finish their season while the police continued killing black people. This time, Jacob Blake was murdered in Kenosha, Wisconsin and the NBA players effectively went on strike refusing to play basketball that day.
The players all met that night to discuss whether or not they should extend their strike and refuse to play until there was legit change in the way officers were allowed to slay black people and face zero consequences for their actions.
Apparently Barack Obama spoke with LeBron and the boys and suggested they create a coalition for social reform or whatever but essentially told them ‘shut up and dribble’. The obvious defense is that these players have a larger audience playing on ESPN every night and they should use their visibility to bring change.
That is at best, kindergarten shit and at worst, evil.
Okay so here’s the thing, the most power that workers have is their labor. So by withholding that labor and stopping production, they create their own leverage in any potential negotiations or changes they want to be made.
Meaning, NBA players would’ve had astronomically more power and influence had they refused to come back and play then they do by saying Breonna Taylor’s name over and over in post-game press conferences. What Kyrie Irving says after a basketball has absolutely zero power over what the Kentucky attorney general is doing.
To recap, Barack Obama gathered the troops to stomp out Bernie Sanders and any progressive political ideals and then ended a labor strike and union busted.
And right before 2020 ended, Obama came back to confirm my suspicions.
“If you believe, as I do, that we should be able to reform the criminal justice system so that it’s not biased and treats everybody fairly, I guess you can use a snappy slogan like ‘Defund The Police,’ but, you know, you lost a big audience the minute you say it, which makes it a lot less likely that you’re actually going to get the changes you want done,”
Barack Obama told the NBA players not to go back to work and not challenge the status quo in regards to policing and then came out and said ‘don’t say defund the police anymore’.
2020 was so close to being the year where we all look around and realize that we can topple the structures that are restricting our lives with a presidential candidate that actually offered us tangible policies, a universal microscope on American racism following George Floyd’s murder by the police and Barack Obama put out every fire in the snap of his fingers.
Also just for the casuals, obviously Donald Trump sucked too. Duh. But man, Barack Obama was a straight up villain in 2020.
