The New York Mets have won 12 of their last 13 games and are now 2 games above .500 for the first time since May. They currently sit 1.5 games back of the Wild Card spot and out of nowhere, the Mets just magically transformed into the best team in baseball.
How did this happen?
After an entire season of team meetings and attempting to fight random journalists and Brodie Van Wagenen having no idea how to build a team, the Mets suddenly are the power players in the National League Wild Card race.
Everyone, including myself, was puzzled by the Mets decision to acquire Marcus Stroman at the deadline while holding onto all of their best trade assets only to move Jason Vargas to the division rival, Phillies. It made zero sense.
Since falling to a season-low 11 games below .500 on July 12th, the Mets are a league-best 19-5 and statistically, they have the best pitching staff in the league.
I suppose that shouldn’t be that shocking when they re-signed the reigning NL Cy Young winner, Jacob deGrom and shit, deGrom might win again this season. He’s allowed more than two runs in a start twice….since April.
Here are Zach Wheeler’s last three starts:
20.1 innings, 19 Ks, 1 BB, 3 ERs, 3 Ws.
Okay yea, good idea not trading him.
The weakness of this pitching staff is their bullpen. No worries though, Noah Syndergaard has gone at least 7 innings in five consecutive starts.
Oh, and they happened to trade for Marcus Stroman, who would be the best starter on about 15 teams in the majors right now.
It also helps having a Pete Alonso on your roster who’s hit 36 homers with 81 RBIs and 148 wRC+. He’s having one of the best seasons in all of baseball ignoring the fact that it’s his first year in the major leagues.
Jeff McNeil, JD Davis, Michael Comforto, Ahmed Rosario and Wilson Ramos have all figured out at the same exact right time. The team that looked great on paper has almost somehow managed to outperform the fact that they’re wearing Mets jerseys, which we all know instantly erases players talents.
Are the New York Mets going to the World Series or giving people blue balls?
It’s always wild to remember that the Mets have been to the World Series far more recently than the New York Yankees but they got to that World Series on the back of their pitching staff. Replace Matt Harvey with Marcus Stroman and who’s stopping them?
It’s also important to remember that it’s the New York Mets, who had a literal dumpster fire outside of their stadium. The thing about the MLB season compared to most leagues, is that it’s long as hell. We watched the Mets in April and May and June. They were trash. It’s cute they’re having a great month but there is no reason to trust this sample size.
Pray for Mets fans and their blue balls. Just put some ice on it, bro.
