This is one of the most crowded MVP conversations we’ve had in the NBA in a long time which is interesting considering that LeBron James is nowhere near any of these conversations.
Giannis, Harden, Paul George (Playoff P), Nikola Jokic, Steph Curry. We know all of the obvious names but there are guys who are putting up monster numbers and leading their teams to victory that aren’t getting the credit they deserve.
Here are the 4 dark horse MVP candidate that no one is talking about:
1. Blake Griffin
Blake Griffin is having the best season of his career scoring 25.3 points per game on 47% shooting, 36% from the 3-point line on around 7 3-point attempts per game with 7.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists.
Detroit is currently on a 4-game winning streak as the Pistons sit 6th in the Eastern Conference when last season they didn’t come close to the playoffs. Blake Griffin is carrying this team on his back.
Don’t be shocked when he makes an All-NBA team and LeBron James does not.
2. Bojan Bogdanovic
Victor Oladipo’s knee exploded live on television. Shrapnel hit fans in the upper decks. Everyone sitting courtside was covered in blood. It was a Quentin Tarantino movie out there. Gruesome.
Anddd the Pacers still sit comfortably in that third seed unbothered by the loss of their star player as their real superstar has emerged: Bojan Bogdanovic.
Bojan is averaging 22 points since Oladipo’s leg turned to dust. 50% from the field. 43% from 3. 82% from the free throw line. I’ll never forget him locking down LeBron in the playoffs last season. Bogdanovic is a killer and he is one of the most efficient scorers in the league right now carrying Indiana to the Promised Land.
3. Karl-Anthony Towns
Before I say ‘no one is talking about Karl Anthony Towns’ I should add the disclaimer that the Minnesota Timberwolves are absolute trash and I don’t think I’ve ever seen Andrew Wiggins make a jump shot. He has a max contract. I’m going to stash that in the ‘bad’ category.
Karl-Anthony Towns’ last 5 games:
34 pts 21 rebs 5 asts 2 blks
37 pts 18 rebs 3 asts 2 blks
42 pts 17 rebs 4 asts
28 pts 10 rebs 7 asts
41 pts 14 rebs 1 ast 2 stls
Mad decent. I’m not ready to say that KAT is better than Anthony Davis but KAT is better than Anthony Davis. KAT would be on the Lakers right now if he stopped gaming for a second and answered Rich Paul’s phone calls.
4. Kevin Durant
The most fascinating things about this current MVP race is that everyone that I read or hear talk about potential winners, they always go to Steph Curry first and rarely do they mention Durant.
KD is having his best statistical season in a Warriors jersey and he’s missed a grand total of zero games. 27.5 points and 62.5% true shooting. He’s quietly the best player in the league but he’s so fucking annoying that I hate giving him any credit for this.
Durant is the most consistently tremendous player on the Warriors and I
FUTURE KNICKS LEGEND KEVIN DURANT.
