2020 Presidential Candidate Amy Klobuchar Is The Real Life Version of Selina Meyer From Veep

Minnesota Senator, Amy Klobuchar, is in a biiiiit of trouble recently with a bunch of reports coming from literally every major publication all descrbing in detail how she treats her staff and it pretty much all just reads as a script from HBO’s Veep.

This is how the NYT story starts:

Senator Amy Klobuchar was hungry, forkless and losing patience.

An aide, joining her on a trip to South Carolina in 2008, had procured a salad for his boss while hauling their bags through an airport terminal. But once onboard, he delivered the grim news: He had fumbled the plastic eating utensils before reaching the gate, and the crew did not have any forks on such a short flight.

What happened next was typical: Ms. Klobuchar berated her aide instantly for the slip-up. What happened after that was not: She pulled a comb from her bag and began eating the salad with it, according to four people familiar with the episode.

Then she handed the comb to her staff member with a directive: Clean it

This is insane. You can really picture Gary lugging around Selina’s bag and dropping the only fork they have and then not telling her until the plane has already taken off. And then you can imagine Richard handing her a comb to eat her salad with, only for her to hand the comb back and say ‘clean it’.

This is like a S4E2 cold open. Just read this excerpt from NYT about Amy Klobuchar suspecting a mole within her staff:

The senator feared sabotage from her own team: In an email, she once raised the prospect of an in-house mole. She and her top confidantes could complicate the future job opportunities of some staff members who sought to leave, former aides said, sometimes speaking to their would-be employers to register her displeasure. And Ms. Klobuchar frequently suggested that her aides were preventing her from greater standing in Washington and beyond, former staff members said.

We are becoming a joke,” she wrote in one email about the contents of her Twitter feed, “and it is making me a joke.”

I have to go back and re-binge Veep but this is deadass a storyline ripped straight from the show. I’m pretty sure Selina Meyer thought she sent that ‘we are becoming a joke’ email to Kent but she accidentally emailed it to a Washington Post reporter.

Part of me is unsure if she is re-enacting scenes from Veep or if the multiverse is collapsing in on itself. It wouldn’t shock me if Amy Klobuchar just watched a Veep marathon and just figured that people in Washington always cursed and screamed at other people so from her perspective, she’s behaving totally appropriately.

She was known to throw office objects in frustration, including binders and phones, in the direction of aides, they said. Low-level employees were asked to perform duties they described as demeaning, like washing her dishes or other cleaning — a possible violation of Senate ethics rules, according to veterans of the chamber.

Everyone and their mothers are running for president in 2020 and each one of them is more problematic than the last but none of them matter after reading this report. Amy Klobuchar 2020. She is the real-life Selina Meyer and after 4 years of Trump destroying the planet, we all need some comedy as the Titanic is sinking.
