As I was going through the list of movies that I watched this year, I quickly realized that it’s mostly summer blockbusters and action movies. I sort of missed all of the Oscar garbage. If you’ve read any of my previous end of the year lists and thought they were ‘objective’. I promise you won’t make that mistake this time around. I’m going straight personal choice here.
I should point out some quick honorable mentions that deserve a tip of the cap. Thor: Ragnarok and Girls Trip were the funniest movies of the year and probably funnier than anything that came out last year. Girl Trip broke RECORDS for how much money a comedy can make but yea no, keep making Kevin Hart/The Rock movies that suck. Good idea, Hollywood.
Justice League wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be so congrats, DC!
I can’t not mention Mother!. The best worst movie I’ve ever seen. It is so unapologetically what it is and as a filmgoer, I appreciate a director getting the green light to make whatever weird visual vomit inducing biblical nonsense he wants. There are too many copy and pasted Marvel movies like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and not enough unique motion pictures. Mother made me want to punch myself in the face and that guttural reaction deserves some sort of recognition. Fuck that movie, though.
Anyway, here are the 10 best movies of 2017:
10. Baby Driver
I’m still not 100% sure if Baby Driver is a good movie or not but I’m glad it exists. Edgar Wright basically made a two-hour music video and I was all in for it. Baby Driver is essentially just the hipster PG-13 version of Drive and I honestly think I prefer Ansel Eglort dancing through the streets of Atlanta over Ryan Gosling stomping some dude’s brains in on an elevator as his bae watches in horror.
Plus, this is the last time we can enjoy Kevin Spacey before Hollywood digitally replaces him with Christopher Plummer in every role. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention all of the weird Oedipus Rex stuff in this movie about Baby falling in love with a girl who looks and sings exactly like his mother. I mean, the girl even works at the same exact diner that his mom used to. Baby reallyyy loved his mom, huh?
